The Quadratic Formula
Students learn the quadratic formula, understand its derivation from completing the square, and apply it to solve quadratic equations. Includes guidance on when to use the formula versus other methods, interpretation of the discriminant, and real-world applications.
The Language of Operations
Students learn the precise vocabulary for all four arithmetic operations (sum, difference, product, quotient, factor, dividend, divisor) and connect these terms to real-world situations while building confidence through familiar contexts.
Expressions, Equations, and Mathematical Reasoning
Students learn the vocabulary of algebra (variables, expressions, equations, terms, coefficients, and constants) and apply order of operations (PEMDAS), properties of operations, and expression evaluation to build the foundation for all 6th grade mathematics.
Fractions and Decimals: Two Languages, One Idea
Students discover that fractions and decimals are two representations of the same value, master equivalent fractions and simplifying using GCF, convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers, understand the reciprocal, and connect fraction-to-decimal conversion to the division meaning of a fraction.
Number Relationships and Place Value
Students deepen their understanding of factors and multiples, distinguish prime from composite numbers, find GCF and LCM, and extend place value knowledge through thousandths, building the vocabulary and number sense needed for fraction and decimal operations.
Speaking Mathematics Practice
A 15-question practice covering all three Speaking Mathematics intervention lessons: the language of operations, number relationships and place value, and the connection between fractions and decimals. Questions test vocabulary recall, conceptual understanding, and application across all key topics.
M6B - Q4 - Unit 1 Test
A 30-question multiple-choice summative test covering Language of Operations, Number Relationships and Place Value, Fractions and Decimals, and Expressions, Equations, and Mathematical Reasoning.
M6B - Q4 - Unit 1 Review
A dense review covering all four Speaking Mathematics intervention lessons: The Language of Operations, Number Relationships and Place Value, Fractions and Decimals, and Expressions, Equations, and Mathematical Reasoning. Includes key concept summaries and 24 practice questions.
Volume of Cylinders, Cones, and Spheres
Students learn the formulas for calculating the volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres. Through visual explanations, real-world examples, and guided practice, students understand the relationships between these three formulas and apply them to solve problems involving three-dimensional shapes.
Grade 6 Mathematics Diagnostic
A 31-item diagnostic for the summer program screening all five Grade 6 NCSCOS math domains. Item counts mirror the NC End-of-Grade weight distribution (Ratios & Proportional Relationships ~26%, Expressions & Equations ~24%, The Number System ~22%, Geometry ~14%, Statistics & Probability ~14%) to predict EOG performance and identify gaps. Multiple-choice and matching only; distractors target common errors.
Grade 5 Mathematics Diagnostic
A 30-item diagnostic for the summer program that screens all five Grade 5 NCSCOS math domains. Item counts mirror the NC End-of-Grade weight distribution (Fractions heaviest at ~40%, Base Ten ~27%, Measurement/Geometry ~21%, Operations & Algebraic Thinking ~11%) so results predict EOG performance and pinpoint reteaching needs. Multiple-choice and matching only; distractors target common misconceptions.
Practice: Represent and interpret data, including line plots. (NC.5.MD.2)
Targeted practice for NC.5.MD.2: Represent and interpret data, including line plots. Each problem gives immediate feedback with the full worked solution. Ungraded practice toward proficiency.
Grade 8 Mathematics Diagnostic
A 32-item diagnostic for the summer program screening all four Grade 8 NCSCOS math reporting areas. Item counts mirror the NC End-of-Grade weight distribution (Functions ~31%, Geometry ~25%, combined Number System & Expressions/Equations ~25%, Statistics & Probability ~19%) to predict EOG performance and identify gaps. Multiple-choice and matching only; distractors target common errors.
Practice: Display and interpret bivariate categorical data using two-way tables and relative frequencies. (NC.8.SP.4)
Targeted practice for NC.8.SP.4: Display and interpret bivariate categorical data using two-way tables and relative frequencies. Each problem gives immediate feedback with the full worked solution. Ungraded practice toward proficiency.
Grade 7 Mathematics Diagnostic
A 32-item diagnostic for the summer program screening all five Grade 7 NCSCOS math domains.
