Fossil Record
The fossil record is the total collection of fossils in rock layers worldwide, documenting how life has changed over geologic time.
Definition
The fossil record is all the fossils that have ever been found, arranged from oldest to youngest, like a giant picture book showing what lived on Earth at different times. It is the ordered sequence of fossils preserved in Earth's rock layers, and because deeper layers are older, it shows the succession of life through time: simple marine organisms first, then more complex forms. It provides evidence for evolution, extinction, and changing environments and climates, though it is incomplete because fossilization is rare. The record documents the principle of faunal succession, the basis for biostratigraphy, and reveals large-scale patterns: the Cambrian explosion of animal body plans about $539$ million years ago, five major mass extinctions, and adaptive radiations that followed each. Statistical analysis corrects for sampling bias, rock volume, and preservation potential. Transitional fossils such as Tiktaalik (fish to tetrapod) and feathered dinosaurs link major groups.
Example
Deep, old rock layers hold only sea creatures with shells, while higher, younger layers hold fish, then land plants, then dinosaurs, then mammals. The record shows the sudden disappearance of non-avian dinosaurs and many marine species at the end of the Cretaceous, about $66$ million years ago, matching a layer enriched in iridium from an asteroid impact. The end-Permian extinction about $252$ million years ago eliminated roughly $80$ to $90\%$ of marine species, and the record shows recovery took millions of years. Foraminifera in deep-sea cores document orbital-scale climate cycles with a resolution of thousands of years.
Key Insight
The fossil record shows that most kinds of living things that ever existed are now extinct. It reads like a book with many missing pages, but the pages that remain are always in the right order. It is also the only direct evidence of how ecosystems respond to rapid climate change and extinction. Its past crises are the natural experiments used to understand the present one.
