Label the parts
✓ CompleteEach lettered badge marks one part of this wave. Choose the right term for every badge.
Shake a rope, play a sound, shine a light, and shake the ground. Four very different waves share the same parts. Measure them, change them one at a time, and find out which part is tied to the energy a wave carries.

A wave is a disturbance that carries energy from one place to another. The rope, the air, or the ground only wiggles in place. The energy travels. A simple wave is a pattern that repeats, and three numbers describe it:
How tall the wave is, measured from the rest position to a crest. Amplitude is related to the wave's energy.
How many waves pass a point each second. It is measured in hertz (Hz).
The distance from one crest to the next crest.
Glossary (opens in a new tab): amplitude, frequency, wavelength, crest and trough, wave speed
Pick a medium, then use the sliders. Turn on the measuring tools when a station asks you to measure. Each grid square is one unit.
Swipe sideways to see the whole wave on a small screen.
Your device asks for less motion, so the wave starts paused. Press Play to animate it.
The energy meter follows the amplitude. Doubling the amplitude more than doubles the energy.
Work the stations in any order. Station 5 opens when stations 1 to 4 are done. A check mark means you got it right.
Each lettered badge marks one part of this wave. Choose the right term for every badge.
Scientists change one thing at a time. For each trial, predict first, lock in your prediction, move that one slider in the Wave Lab, then check what really happened.
Use the markers and the timer to measure this wave's wavelength, amplitude, and frequency. Pause the wave to place markers. Measurements within a small tolerance count as correct.
Put marker 1 on one crest and marker 2 on the next crest. The picture shows the distance.
Slide the height marker from the dashed rest line up to the top of a crest.
Press Start. For 10 seconds, press +1 each time a crest reaches the gate. Then divide your count by 10.
Each scenario needs a wave with the right amount of energy. Use the amplitude slider to land the energy meter inside the shaded target zone, then check.
