What is scale? What is magnitude?

Scale is how big or small something is compared to something else. Magnitude is the size of a number β€” whether it's tiny, medium, or enormous. A grain of sand and a mountain are both real, but they live at totally different scales.

Our brains are great at comparing things that are close in size, like a cat versus a dog. But we struggle when sizes get extreme. Is a million seconds a long time? What about a billion? Today you'll build a feel for sizes far beyond everyday life, using one powerful tool: powers of ten.

Powers of ten

Big numbers get hard to write and read. Powers of ten are a shortcut: instead of writing all those zeros, we write a small number up high, the exponent, that says how many times to multiply by ten.

The pattern: add 1 to the exponent and the number gets 10× bigger. Subtract 1 and it gets 10× smaller. That tiny exponent controls a HUGE amount of size.

When you scale a shape up, something surprising happens. Double the side of a square and the area doesn't double, it quadruples. Let's see why with our own eyes.
